I've started barking again when I wake up at night, and unlike before, mom comes out and says to me "be quiet, you'll wake up the neighbors." I don't know what neighbors are, but I figure I'll bark if I want to; I just want to play for a bit and not be alone in the kitchen. As long as I get to play, I usually end up going back to sleep after an hour or so with mom muttering that it's not right to be awake at 3 in the morning.

Yeah - I hate the kitchen. Not nearly enough to chew on in there.
Night time is a good time for playing. I used to run up and down the stairs at night and jump onto mom lying in bed.
But now that I'm older, I've realized it's more fun to play with her during the day, since she's a lot more fun when she's awake. Maybe when you're a little older you'll be able to sleep on the floor near your mom and dad and it won't be so lonely.
PS - Good luck at your surgery today.
